October 2006
The rumours had been bubbling for some time that Cork was about to host its first marathon in 21 years. Not that anybody really believed them, but the rumours were publicly confirmed at the Dublin City Marathon in October 2006, when a small, but significant, stall announced the return of the Cork City Marathon!
It was the Jazz Weekend in Cork, so the team had to be coaxed into leaving the city, but were well rewarded for their sacrifice – we had a fantastic two days at the Dublin Marathon Expo! The first signs of the on-going excitement at the return of this great event to the ‘Real Capital' were shown. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of so many people, not least the wonderful Fenlon Family, organizers of the Longford Marathon, and the inimitable Frank Greally. It was also good to meet some of the Dublin City Marathon Organisers and Seamus Rooney, Event Manager for Belfast City Marathon, who has been so helpful to the Cork team.
Thanks to our Title Sponsor, The Montenotte Hotel, we were able to offer a draw for a weekend for two at The Montenotte Hotel, Cork. There was no catch, other than giving us your contact details! It was pot-luck and the lucky winner (drawn by the completely unbiased Sarah, in the Cork Marathon office) was Alan O'Mahoney from Co. Meath.
The hit of the weekend at the stall were the Clove Rocks (or as we learnt, in French "roche de clou de girofle"!). It seems to be a real Cork thing, but these clove-flavoured sugar rocks went down a treat. Expect to see more of them on June 4th!
