Cork's Lord Mayor to lead the field!

Lord Mayor's RaceLeisureWorld Cork will train two of Cork’s leading men to run in the 2010 Cork City Marathon – Cork City Council’s Lord Mayor, Cllr. Dara Murphy, and Bord Gáis Chief Executive, Mr John Mullins, are preparing to run in the relay event of the marathon.

Earlier this year, at a post-marathon reception, Bord Gáis Chief Executive John Mullins challenged the Lord Mayor to race against him over the first leg of the 2010 Marathon in return for continued sponsorship of the Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon!

The Lord Mayor didn’t hesitate in accepting the challenge and welcomed Bord Gáis Energy back as title sponsors for 2010. “The relay is what makes this the Marathon for everyone”, Cllr Murphy said. “It’s an incentive for everyone, including myself, to get out there and improve their fitness. With over 170 charities benefiting from the marathon each year it’s also an ideal opportunity for fund raising, so I’m delighted to take part in this great event”, the Lord Mayor continued. “John may have the experience of the 2009 relay in his favour, but I’m confident that with LeisureWorld’s expert help I’ll give him a good run for his money!”

LeisureWorld, who have been involved in the Cork Marathon from the outset, have come on board to prepare the two competitors. The Lord Mayor will train out of LesiureWorld Churchfield and John Mullins will train out of LeisureWorld Bishopstown. Mark McManus, Health and Wellness Manager of LeisureWorld Bishopstown, will devise suitable training programmes and oversee their progress. With now only 40 weeks left to the 2010 marathon it’s time for everyone to start their training!!

Christine Moloney, Chief Executive of LeisureWorld, said that “the Cork City Marathon is a fantastic event for the city each year, and it’s great to help motivate people to get out there and feel the difference that a healthy lifestyle choice can make. We’re delighted to be to be involved in training and coaching two of Cork’s leading businessmen”.

The public will be able to follow the training diary of both runners through the LeisureWorld website blogs (www.Leisureworldcork.com), and they will also be keeping everyone up to date through Twitter (link shortly).

The Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 7th June 2010 and is supported by Cork City Council who are committed to growing the event to become one of the major events in the Irish sporting calendar.

Youth Team Relay

THE ‘Marathon For Everyone’ is living up to its motto by introducing a Youth Relay category to the Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon taking place on Bank Holiday Monday June 1st in 2009.

Jim O’Donovan, Race Director, Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon said: “We’re introducing the Youth Relay to encourage young people to get active. For those who are already active, it offers a chance to be part of this great event. Team captains must be at least 18 on 1st June 2009 with the other four members being 16 or 17 years old on 1st June 2009. No member of the team is allowed to complete more than one section of the race.

The first runner from each team will start the race and finish their leg before handing over to a team-mate at the fixed change-over points. The stages range from just over three miles to just over six and a half miles. Apart from the age stipulations, the main difference between the Youth and the main team relay is that the adults have the option to do more than one leg each if they so wish.

The cost of entry for a Youth Relay Team is €75 per team and entries are limited. Each team must complete the entry form and a youth relay declaration form for each of the four youth members. Forms are only available by contacting the Bord Gáis Energy Cork City marathon office, preferably by email at info@corkcitymarathon.ie or by phone on 021-4924170.”
